in the international research and education community, especially in the field of Operations Management and Operations Research. OM and OR are at the core of the undergraduate IE program. The graduate programs (MSc and PhD) in Operations Management & Logistics attract top-level students from all over the world. Researchers are member of the Beta research school and participate in
industrial activities with members of the European Supply Chain Forum.
The School of Industrial Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology is looking for a PhD candidate in the area
of Operations Management. The group Operations, Planning, Accounting and Control (OPAC) conducts research in the area of Operations Management, with specific emphasis on
- Planning and Control in Manufacturing, Services, and Supply Chains;
- Distribution Logistics;
- Maintenance and Reliability;
- Supply chain finance.
Research is generally quantitative in nature, while many of the researchers also engage in empirical research. All research is embedded in Beta, the KNAW-recognized research school for Operations Management & Logistics.
You will work as a PhD student on a project in the research area of supply chain finance. Reverse factoring contracts help small-scale firms supplying parts to large OEMs acquire financing at favorable lending rates. Invoices that the OEM has approved are financed by the bank at rates that are extended to the large OEM which typically has a better credit rating. Through these contracts, suppliers receive payment quicker while OEMs can extend their payment terms. In this project, we consider a setting with multiple OEMS and suppliers, with each OEM extending reverse factoring contracts to each of their suppliers. The study aims to determine which invoices and what portion of that those invoices should be financed taking into account factors such as the risk free rate, and states of the economy. These optimal control policies used to make decisions will typically be obtained using stochastic control theory.
You are expected to do both supervised and unsupervised research and to write a PhD thesis and research papers within the specified field. Apart from conducting research, you are required to complete an educational program offered by the BETA Research School as part of the degree requirements. Finally, as all PhD students do, you are engage in a small number of teaching activities (less than 10% of total time).
You will be supervised by Dr Arun Chockalingam, under final responsibility of Professor Jan Fransoo.
You should have completed (or be close to completion of) a Master’s degree in industrial engineering, applied mathematics, or operations
research, with specifically a solid background in stochastic operations research methods.
You will be appointed for a period of 4 years from September 1, 2012 within a challenging job in a dynamic and ambitious University. Gross annual salary is in the range of €28.500 – €36.500 (on a full-time basis), this includes 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end of year allowance.
