What ECOWAS grants for young entrepreneurs actually are
The Economic Community of West African States runs enterprise and youth funding programmes for entrepreneurs in its member countries. These are business grants: money or support for a venture, not a scholarship for a degree. The official ECOWAS site holds the current eligibility rules, amounts and application windows, and those change from round to round.
That matters for search intent. If you typed "ecowas grants for young entrepreneurs" hoping to fund a master's in business, you are looking at the wrong scheme. If you want seed money or business support for a company you already run, go to the ECOWAS site directly. If you want a scholarship to study business, management or finance abroad, the rest of this page is for you.
Grants and scholarships are not interchangeable
A grant funds an activity. A scholarship funds study. Some business schools blur the line by calling a fee waiver an "entrepreneurship grant", but the money still goes to your tuition, not your company. Read the award description before you spend a weekend on the application.
How to read this list of business and economics scholarships
The awards below are grouped by what they pay for, because that is the difference that matters when you are budgeting. A full tuition waiver and a monthly stipend are not the same offer, even when both are called "fully funded".
- Full awards cover tuition plus living costs or travel.
- Tuition waivers cut or remove the fee but leave you to fund your own living costs.
- Partial awards pay a fixed sum or a percentage.
Use the filtered list for this page to see what is open right now, and the wider scholarship finder if you want to search by country instead. Our economics and finance scholarship list and MBA scholarship list cover the business-school side in more depth.

Economics, development and policy funding for business-adjacent degrees
Many business and management applicants end up in development economics, public policy or finance for development. These awards fit that route.
- DAAD Development-Related Postgraduate Scholarships in Germany pays a monthly stipend and insurance, with deadlines around August to October each year.
- VLIR-UOS ICP Connect Scholarships in Belgium for Master's Study is a full award covering tuition, travel, insurance and living costs.
- ARES Scholarships in Belgium for Developing Countries | CUD ARES covers tuition, travel, a subsistence allowance, visa and insurance.

Finance and economics scholarships at European universities
Continental Europe is where most of the tuition-waiver money sits for master's students in finance and economics. The awards are smaller than a full US package but the fees are lower too.
- UNIL Master's Grants for International Students at University of Lausanne pays CHF 1,600 per month for the duration of the master's.
- ETH Zurich Excellence Masters Scholarships (ESOP) combines a CHF 12,000 per semester grant with a tuition waiver.
- Radboud Scholarship Programme at Radboud University for International Master's Students cuts the tuition fee and covers visa and insurance costs.
- VU Amsterdam Fellowship Programme (VUFP) for International Master's Students covers tuition fees only.
- Uppsala University Global Scholarships for Master's Study in Sweden covers the full tuition fee but not living costs.
- Chalmers IPOET Scholarships for International Students, Sweden is a 75% tuition reduction, rising to 85% in the second year for strong students.
- BTH Scholarships for Non-EU/EEA Master's Students at Blekinge Institute of Technology is normally a 50% tuition reduction.
- Umeå University Scholarships for International Students offers a full or partial tuition waiver.
- Invest in Your Talent Scholarships in Italy pays a grant and exempts tuition fees.
Country pages give the fuller picture: scholarships in the Netherlands, scholarships in Sweden, scholarships in Switzerland and scholarships in France.
Doctoral and research funding for business and management
A Doctor of Business Administration or a PhD in management is usually funded by a fellowship or a salaried position rather than a taught-degree scholarship. These are the awards on our list that reach doctoral level.
- Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme 2025/26 for International Students pays an annual stipend plus a travel allowance for up to three years.
- University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowships (UMGF) for Master's and PhD Study in Canada pays a yearly amount set by the department.
- ENS International Selection Scholarships for Master's Study in France pays a monthly grant for three years and provides campus accommodation.
For taught professional doctorates, check the business school's own funding page. Most DBA programmes are fee-paying and self-funded, and the official page has the current figure.
Who these business scholarships suit and who should look elsewhere
These awards suit you if you are applying to a named degree programme and can show why that programme fits your plans. Selection panels read motivation letters closely, and a clear link between your work history and the course matters more than a long list of achievements.
Look elsewhere if you want money to start or grow a company. None of the awards on this page funds a business. For that, the ECOWAS entrepreneurship programmes and your own national enterprise agency are the right starting points, and the official pages carry the current rules.
Also look elsewhere if you need full living costs covered. Many European awards here are tuition waivers only, and you will need separate funds for rent and food.
How to apply, step by step
- Pick the degree first. Choose the programme and university, then find the scholarships attached to it. Applying to a scholarship without a course in mind rarely works.
- Check the eligibility rules. Nationality, degree level and subject restrictions decide most outcomes before anyone reads your essay.
- Note the deadline in your own time zone. Several awards close at a stated local time, so convert it.
- Gather your documents. Transcripts, degree certificates, passport, CV, motivation letter and references are standard.
- Draft the motivation letter around the course. Name modules, professors or research groups you want to work with.
- Ask referees early. Give them your CV and the programme details, and set your own deadline before theirs.
- Submit before the final day. Portals slow down near deadlines, and a late upload counts as a late application.
Our scholarship tips cover letters and references in more detail.
Documents and timeline: what to prepare and when
| Stage | What you do | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Three to six months before the deadline | Shortlist programmes and awards | Transcripts, degree certificates |
| Two to three months before | Request references and draft the motivation letter | CV, programme details for referees |
| One month before | Finalise documents and check translations | Passport, certified copies, language test result |
| Two weeks before | Upload and review the form | All documents in the required format |
| Deadline week | Submit and keep the confirmation | Submission receipt |
Deadlines in this cluster cluster around two windows: late autumn for US early rounds and Swiss and German awards, and January to February for Dutch and Swedish master's funding. UK and Australian awards tend to close later, from March to May.
Common mistakes business applicants make
- Confusing a grant with a scholarship. Business grants fund ventures, not tuition. Check where the money goes before you apply.
- Applying to one award only. Spread applications across several programmes and countries with different deadlines.
- Ignoring tuition-only awards. A fee waiver still saves a large sum, even if you fund your own living costs.
- Reusing a generic motivation letter. Panels spot it immediately. Write one letter per programme.
- Missing the referee request. A missing reference sinks an otherwise strong application.
- Assuming a deadline is the same every year. Our listings carry the current round; the official page has the next one.
Alternatives if these awards do not fit
If the business and economics list is too competitive or the deadlines have passed, widen the search by country and by field. Scholarships in United Kingdom, scholarships in United States, scholarships in Germany and scholarships in Australia are the biggest pools.
Field pages open up awards that accept business applicants without being labelled business: any field of study scholarships, IT scholarships for digital marketing and analytics routes, and engineering scholarships for construction and project management. Our guides and scholarships by country pages help you narrow it down.
Two more awards worth a look if your work touches development: Allan & Nesta Ferguson Global Development Scholarships at University of East Anglia and Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme at UK Universities.
