What counts as a diploma scholarship?
A diploma scholarship pays for a course that sits below or beside a full degree: a vocational diploma, an associate degree, a certificate, or a postgraduate diploma taken after a bachelor's degree. The award may cover tuition only, or add a monthly stipend for rent, food and travel.
Diploma funding is thinner than degree funding, so the search is different. Fewer foundations run open diploma rounds, and many awards that name a bachelor's or master's level also accept diploma and certificate students. The Endeavour VET Leadership Award is the clearest example of an award built for diploma and associate degree study, and it pays a monthly stipend rather than fees.
Postgraduate diplomas are a second route. The Recanati-Kaplan Foundation Scholarships fund a Postgraduate Diploma in International Wildlife Conservation Practice at Oxford, and the Bartlett Masters Scholarship Scheme at University College London lists certificate and diploma courses alongside its master's programmes.
How to read this diploma scholarship list
Every entry below comes from our own listings, and each one names the level it accepts. Start by checking that line: if an award says master's only, a diploma application will be rejected before it is scored.
Then look at what the award pays. A tuition waiver lowers your bill but leaves living costs to you. A stipend pays you monthly and is usually the better fit if you cannot fund rent from savings. The deadline column tells you when the round closes, and the link takes you to the full listing with the official page.
Use the filtered list for this page to see which diploma and certificate awards are open right now, and the scholarship finder to widen the search to other levels.

Diploma and certificate awards that pay a stipend
These awards put money in your account each month, which matters most for vocational students who are not eligible for large tuition discounts.
- Endeavour VET Leadership Award for International Students, Australian Government: open to diploma and associate degree students in Australia, with a stipend of AU$3,000 per month capped at AU$36,000 per calendar year, plus a travel allowance of up to AU$3,000 and an establishment allowance. The listing gives the round as annual, closing around 15 November.
- Endeavour Postgraduate Leadership Award (Australian Government) for Masters/PhD: the same stipend structure for postgraduate study, useful if you plan to move from a diploma into a master's.
- idealo Scholarship for Pioneers of Tomorrow: £650 a Month for One Year: open to any degree level, paying £650 a month for a year plus coaching matched to your subject.
- Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships for International PhD and Postdoc Researchers: CHF 2,450 per month plus health insurance and a housing deposit grant, for research-level study in Switzerland.
Stipend awards are usually paid pro rata for the length of your course, so a one-year diploma receives less in total than a longer programme at the same monthly rate.
Awards that cut your tuition bill
Tuition awards suit diploma students who can cover living costs but need help with fees. Several of them accept certificate and diploma courses directly.
| Programme | Level accepted | What it covers | Deadline in our listing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bartlett Masters Scholarship Scheme at University College London | Certificate, diploma, master's | £10,000 as partial fee remittance | 3 April, annual |
| Adelaide Global Academic Excellence Scholarship (International) at University of Adelaide | Certificate, diploma, bachelor's, master's | 50% tuition fee reduction | 5 January and 14 June, annual |
| La Trobe Academic Excellence Scholarships for International Students | Bachelor's and master's | $10,000 to $20,000 towards tuition | 9 September, 11 November, 6 January |
| University of Auckland International Student Excellence Scholarship (New Zealand) | Bachelor's, postgraduate diploma, master's | 25% of one year of tuition fees | 4 November |
| University of Waikato International Excellence Scholarship, New Zealand | Bachelor's, master's, PhD | $2,500 to $15,000 credited against tuition | Any time, rolling |
The Bartlett award is the clearest diploma option in this group: it names certificate and diploma study and applies a fixed £10,000 against your fees, so you still fund the rest of the course and all living costs. The Adelaide award is competitive and goes to the highest-scoring applicants, so treat it as a stretch rather than a plan.
Who a diploma scholarship suits, and who should look elsewhere
It fits you if
- You are enrolling in a vocational diploma, associate degree, certificate or postgraduate diploma, not a research degree.
- You can move country for the course and meet the host university's admission rules.
- You are ready to apply months before the course starts, because diploma rounds close early.
Look elsewhere if
- You want a full ride for a short course. Most diploma awards are partial, and the fully funded ones sit at postgraduate or research level, such as the Clarendon Fund Scholarships 2027 at University of Oxford (Masters/PhD) or the Rotary Peace Fellowships.
- You need funding for a bachelor's degree. Browse the scholarships in Australia or the scholarships in the United Kingdom instead.
- Your course starts in a few weeks. Diploma deadlines rarely reopen mid-cycle.
Documents you need for a diploma scholarship application
Diploma applications ask for less than research applications but still expect a complete file. Prepare these before you open the form:
- Academic transcripts and certificates for your previous study, translated if they are not in the host language.
- Proof of English or the language of instruction, where the university requires it.
- A copy of your passport and, for some awards, a birth certificate to confirm age.
- A motivation letter or statement of purpose explaining why this diploma leads to your plan.
- An admission offer or application reference from the host institution, since many awards require you to be admitted first.
- Two references, academic or from an employer if you have work experience.
- A budget showing how you will cover the costs the award does not pay.
Keep every file as a named PDF. Reviewers handle many applications, and a missing transcript is the fastest way to be set aside.
How to apply, step by step
- Choose two or three diploma or certificate courses you would actually attend, in countries where you can meet the visa rules.
- Check the level line on each award to confirm it accepts diploma or certificate study.
- Apply to the course first if the scholarship requires an admission offer, and note the university's own deadline.
- Write the motivation letter around the diploma, not around a future degree. Explain the skills you will gain and the job or further study they lead to.
- Collect transcripts, language proof, references and passport copy, and check translation requirements.
- Submit the scholarship form before the deadline in the listing, and keep the confirmation email.
- Track each application in one sheet with the award name, deadline and status, then check the live diploma list for new rounds.
Timeline: when diploma rounds open and close
Diploma deadlines cluster in two windows. Autumn rounds run from September to November for courses starting the following year, and spring rounds run from January to June. The Endeavour VET Leadership Award closes around 15 November in our listing, the Bartlett Masters Scholarship Scheme around 3 April, and the Adelaide Global Academic Excellence Scholarship has rounds on 5 January and 14 June.
Some awards run on a rolling basis. The University of Waikato International Excellence Scholarship accepts applications at any time, which makes it a useful fallback if you miss a fixed round. Always confirm the current date on the official page, because rounds move from year to year.
How selection works for vocational and certificate awards
Reviewers read three things: whether you meet the level and nationality rules, whether your grades clear the bar, and whether your statement explains why this course is the right next step. For vocational awards, work experience and a clear career aim often carry more weight than a high school average.
Competitive tuition awards rank applicants by score. The Adelaide award, for example, goes to the highest-scoring applicants above a stated ATAR or GPA threshold, so a strong transcript matters more than a long letter. Stipend awards tend to weigh the fit between your plan and the host country's priorities.
Expect one round of review and, for some awards, a short interview. Silence after the stated notification date usually means the round has closed.
Common mistakes on diploma scholarship applications
- Applying for a master's-only award with a diploma offer. Check the level line first.
- Missing the course admission deadline and then trying to apply for the scholarship without an offer.
- Sending untranslated transcripts, which are often rejected without review.
- Writing a statement about a future PhD when the award funds a one-year diploma.
- Assuming a tuition waiver covers living costs. The Bartlett award, for instance, is a partial fee remittance only.
- Relying on a single award. Apply to several rounds across the year.
Other routes if no diploma award fits
Widen the search by country and by field. Country pages list every award we track for international students, including those that accept certificate and diploma study: Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Italy.
Field pages help when your diploma is in a specific sector, such as environmental management, health or information technology. If you may later move into a degree, look at awards such as the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Scholarships for Foreign Students in Germany, which fund bachelor's, master's and PhD study, or the Erasmus University Holland Scholarship for Non-EEA Students.
