What the Gates Cambridge Scholarship actually pays for
The award covers the full cost of studying at Cambridge. That means tuition fees, a maintenance allowance, one economy single airfare at the start and end of the course, inbound visa costs and the Immigration Health Surcharge.
The maintenance allowance is £22,000 for 12 months at the 2025-26 rate, pro rata for courses shorter than 12 months. For PhD scholars the award runs for up to 4 years.
On top of that, the Trust offers additional, discretionary funding such as academic development funding, a family allowance and fieldwork support. The official page has the current figures and the full list of what the discretionary funding covers.
Which courses and degrees are eligible
You must be applying for a full-time residential course at Cambridge. The eligible routes are a PhD (full-time or part-time), an MLitt (full-time), an MSc (full-time) or a one-year postgraduate course (full-time), with some exceptions.
Several popular courses are explicitly excluded. Check this list before you spend time on the application:
- Any undergraduate degree, including a BA or a second BA
- MASt courses
- MBA, EMBA and Global EMBA
- Master of Finance (MFin)
- Executive Master of Accounting
- Business Doctorate (BusD)
- PGCE
- MBBChir Clinical Studies
- MD Doctor of Medicine degree (6 years, part-time, Home students only)
- Graduate Course in Medicine (A101)
- Master of Conservation of Easel Painting
- Part-time degrees other than the PhD
- Non-degree courses
You can study any subject Cambridge offers, as long as the course is on the eligible side of that list. If your field is one of the excluded ones, look at other funding routes before you apply.

Who is eligible for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship
The core rule is citizenship: you must be a citizen of any country outside the United Kingdom. There is no list of preferred nationalities and no age limit stated in the award rules.
You must also be applying for one of the eligible full-time courses above. Current Cambridge students can apply for a new postgraduate course. For example, if you are studying for an MPhil now, you can apply for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship to pursue a PhD.
Current Gates Cambridge Scholars may apply for a second scholarship if they are applying for a new degree. All current Cambridge students are considered in the second, international round.
One restriction that catches people out
You cannot apply to fund the remainder of a course you have already started. If you are part way through a PhD, the scholarship is not available for the rest of it.
Deadlines and timeline for 2026 entry
Applications open in September 2026. There are two Gates Cambridge deadlines, and which one applies to you depends on your citizenship and your course.
| Applicant group | Deadline | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| US citizens resident in the USA | 14 October 2026 | First round |
| All other eligible applicants | 8 December 2026 or 6 January 2027 | Depends on the course |
Courses start in September 2026. Confirm your own course deadline on the official site before you plan anything, because the December and January dates split by course rather than by country.
Treat the deadline as the date your complete application, including references, must be in. Late or incomplete applications are not moved to the next round.
How to apply, step by step
There is no separate Gates Cambridge application form. You apply through the University's Graduate Application Portal and opt in to the funding section.
- Choose an eligible full-time course and check its deadline on the official site.
- Open the University of Cambridge Graduate Application Portal when applications open in September 2026.
- Complete the section to apply for admission to the course and a College place.
- Complete the Gates Cambridge part of the funding section. This is the step that puts you in the competition.
- Add any other funding you want to be considered for in the same funding section.
- Arrange your references and upload your documents before the deadline for your course.
- Submit and check the confirmation. Keep your login details for results and any follow-up.
The full instructions are on the official Gates Cambridge website. Read the How to Apply section there before you start, since the portal steps are updated each round.
Documents and references you need
The Gates Cambridge part of the application asks for the same core material as your course application, plus a short statement of why you are applying for this award.
- Academic transcripts and degree certificates
- Two academic references, submitted through the portal
- A research proposal, for research courses such as the PhD or MLitt
- A statement of purpose for the course
- The Gates Cambridge statement on why the scholarship matters to you and what you plan to do with it
- English language test results if your course requires them
- Application fee payment, where the course charges one
Reference letters are the item most often submitted late. Ask your referees early and check that the portal has received them well before your deadline.
How selection works
The Trust awards about 80 scholarships each year to outstanding applicants from outside the UK. Selection looks at academic ability, fit with the course, and the case you make for why the award should go to you.
Shortlisted candidates are usually invited to an interview, and the final decision follows that stage. The official site sets out the criteria and the process for the current round.
Because the number of awards is fixed and the pool is global, the academic bar is high. Your grades, references and written case all carry weight, so treat the Gates Cambridge statement as a serious piece of writing rather than a formality.
Who the Gates Cambridge Scholarship suits, and who should look elsewhere
This award suits a strong student from outside the UK who has already chosen a full-time postgraduate course at Cambridge and can meet that course's academic entry requirements. It fits best if you are ready to apply in the same cycle as your admission application, because the two go through the same portal.
Look elsewhere if you are applying for an MBA, MFin, MASt, PGCE, an undergraduate degree or a part-time course other than the PhD. Those are excluded. It is also the wrong route if you need funding for a course you have already begun.
If Cambridge is not the right fit, browse Scholarships in United Kingdom or the wider Scholarship finder to compare other awards.
Common mistakes applicants make
- Skipping the Gates Cambridge part of the funding section, which leaves you out of the competition even with a strong course application.
- Applying for an excluded course such as the MBA, MFin or MASt.
- Using the wrong deadline. US citizens resident in the USA have an earlier date than everyone else.
- Leaving references to the last week, when referees are slow to respond.
- Applying to fund a course already in progress, which the rules do not allow.
- Reusing a generic statement of purpose instead of writing the Gates Cambridge statement for this award.
