Scholarship Description: Osteoarthritis affects 8 million people in the UK. It is a degenerative joint disease, where cartilage deteriorates, causing joint stiffness and pain. High tibial Osteotomy surgery is one treatment option, where the joint is realigned to redistribute loading and relieve pain. Within our research team we use various methods to assess knee biomechanics including 3D motion capture, dynamic fluoroscopy and image registration, and musculoskeletal modelling. The aims of this project are to further develop and validate these methods so they can be robustly used to quantify knee function, quantify biomechanical benefit from surgery and to assist with treatment planning. The full award will cover the fees at the UK/EU rate and will provide an annual stipend (£13,726 p.a. in 2013/14, updated annually). Overseas candidates should note that they will need to cover the difference between UK and overseas fees.
