Undergraduate Scholarships for International Students in 2026

Undergraduate scholarships are awards that pay part or all of the cost of a first bachelor's degree, and the most useful fact for international students is that deadlines cluster between November and March for the following intake. Some are full rides covering tuition, fees and housing. Others are tuition waivers, partial fee cuts or bursaries divided among eligible students.

This page explains who qualifies, what each type pays, when to apply and how to build an application that survives the first cut.

What counts as an undergraduate scholarship?

An undergraduate scholarship funds study toward a bachelor's degree. It can come from a university, a government or a foundation, and it can be need-based, merit-based or both. The label matters less than the conditions attached: what the award pays, how long it lasts and what you must do to keep it.

Three shapes dominate the listings on this site. Full-cost awards cover tuition and living costs, such as the Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship Program at University of Toronto, which covers tuition, books, incidental fees and full residence support for four years. Tuition awards cut the fee bill only, like the Sydney International Undergraduate Academic Excellence Scholarship, which pays 100% of tuition fees and SSAF for a single degree. Partial awards pay a fixed amount or percentage, such as the NL Scholarship for Non-EEA International Students at €5,000 in the first year.

Some awards are called bursaries, waivers or fellowships. They still belong in your search if they reduce the cost of a bachelor's degree.

How to read this list of undergraduate scholarships

Start with the level filter. Every entry below is open to bachelor's students, but some also admit master's candidates, so check the level line before you spend time on an essay. The filtered list for this page shows current openings at bachelor's level.

Then read four fields in this order: what the award covers, the deadline, whether a separate application is needed, and the renewal rule. Renewal is where most offers quietly shrink. The University of Calgary International Entrance Scholarship renews only if you keep a GPA of 2.60 or more over a minimum of 24.00 units in the previous fall and winter terms. The University of Oulu International Scholarships require at least 60 credits by the end of the previous academic year.

Finally, note whether the scholarship is automatic. The UBC International Merit Scholarships and the ANU Chancellor’s International Scholarships consider eligible applicants without a separate scholarship form, so the admission application is the whole task.

Fully funded undergraduate scholarships: what full cover actually includes

Fully funded usually means tuition plus a set of extras, and the extras differ by award. Read the inclusions line by line before you compare offers.

Full cover is not always the best value. A smaller award at a university with low tuition can leave you with a smaller bill than a full ride with high living costs.

Tuition waivers and partial awards: the larger, quieter group

Most undergraduate scholarships on this site are partial. They are easier to win and easier to stack with other funding, but they rarely cover living costs.

Boston University Presidential Scholarship for International StudentsHalf tuition, renewable up to four years1 December
Fairleigh Dickinson Scholarships for International StudentsUp to $24,000 per year, renewable up to four years1 July (Fall), 1 December (Spring)

Lund University Global Scholarship ProgrammePart or all of the tuition fee; living costs excluded16 February 2026
Padua International Excellence Scholarship Programme€8,000 gross per year plus tuition waiver10 April 2026 / 2 May 2026

Two more partial routes worth knowing: the Vice-Chancellor’s International Scholarships Scheme at University of Sydney pays between $5,000 and $60,000 depending on your ranking, and the CDU Vice-Chancellor’s International High Achievers Scholarships cover 50% of tuition for the full duration of the degree.

Government and national scholarships for undergraduate students

Government schemes often pay more than university awards and carry service or placement conditions. They also run on fixed annual windows.

The Deutschlandstipendium at German Universities pays €300 per month to bachelor's and master's students at public and state-recognised universities, with half from private sponsors and half from the Federal Government. Income and nationality do not affect it, and you apply to your university. The Turkiye Scholarships for International Undergraduate Students bundle a monthly stipend, full tuition, a free one-year Turkish language course, dormitory accommodation, a round-trip air ticket and health insurance, plus university placement. Its listed deadline is from a past round, so treat it as background and check the official page for the current date.

Country-level lists are the fastest way to scan government options: Scholarships in Germany, Scholarships in Canada and Scholarships in Australia each collect the awards open there.

Who qualifies for international undergraduate scholarships?

Eligibility is set award by award, but the same tests recur. Check each one against the official page before you apply.

  • Nationality: many awards are for international students only, and some exclude certain regions. The NL Scholarship is for non-EEA students; the MasterCard Foundation program is for young Africans.
  • Entry status: some awards are for incoming first-year students only, such as the Boston University Presidential Scholarship. Others, like the International Undergraduate Student Bursary at University of Manitoba, are for students already enrolled.
  • Academic record: merit awards expect strong grades. Carleton Prestige Scholarships list a 90% admission average.
  • Financial need: need-based awards require family income and asset documents. UBC and Duke both assess need.
  • Nomination: the Pearson program requires your high school to nominate you.
  • Course and campus: the award must usually be held at the university that offers it, in an eligible programme.

Deadlines and timeline for 2026 entry

Undergraduate scholarship deadlines follow the admission calendar, not a single global date. The earliest cluster sits in November, the main cluster runs from December to March, and a late group falls in spring and summer for mid-year or spring starts.

Work backward. A 15 November deadline means your test scores, transcripts and referee requests should be finished in October. If you are aiming at spring starts, the Scholarships in United States list shows which awards accept spring entry.

How to apply for undergraduate scholarships, step by step

  1. Shortlist five to eight awards that fit your level, nationality and course. Use the filtered list for this page and note each deadline.
  2. Confirm whether a separate scholarship application exists. Emory, for instance, runs its Emory University Scholar Programs alongside admission, with deadlines of 1 November for Early Decision I and 15 November for Early Decision II and Regular Decision.
  3. Apply for admission first where the scholarship depends on it. UBC Merit and ANU consider you automatically once you apply by the admission deadline.
  4. Gather financial documents if the award is need-based. UBC and Duke both assess family finances.
  5. Ask for nomination or references early. The Pearson program needs a school nomination; most others need one or two referees.
  6. Write the scholarship essay or motivation letter for that award, naming the programme and the outcomes you expect.
  7. Submit before the deadline, then track the portal for supplementary forms. Auckland, for example, issues invitations and then requires a supplementary form by 4 November 2026.
  8. Keep proof of every submission and note renewal conditions in your calendar.

Documents and selection: what reviewers look for

Most applications ask for the same file set: transcripts and certificates, proof of English proficiency where required, a passport copy, a CV or activity list, one or two references, a motivation letter, and financial documents for need-based awards. Portfolios or writing samples apply to specific fields.

Selection usually ranks academic strength first, then fit between your goals and the programme, then need where relevant. A motivation letter matters because it is the only place you explain why this degree, at this university, now. Generic letters read as low interest.

Some awards add an interview or a service component. The ICSP Scholarships at University of Oregon USA is a partial tuition waiver tied to the International Cultural Service Program, so expect the service side to count. The Global Business Scholarship at S P Jain School of Global Management is a diversity award for students from underrepresented regions, so explain your background plainly.

Who these scholarships suit, and who should look elsewhere

This group suits students who have a target university and can meet a firm deadline. If you are applying to first-year entry in Canada, the US, Australia, New Zealand or Europe, several awards here will fit you, including the University of Auckland International Student Excellence Scholarship and the EPFL Excellence Fellowships, whose bachelor's round closes 30 April.

Look elsewhere if you need funding for a master's or PhD only, since many of these awards are tied to first degrees. Look elsewhere if you cannot supply financial documents for a need-based award, or if you cannot meet an early deadline and the award has no later round. Students who need full living costs covered should focus on the full-cost awards above rather than partial waivers.

If your field is fixed, filter by subject instead: engineering, medicine or any field of study.

Common mistakes that cost applicants an undergraduate scholarship

  • Missing the automatic route. UBC Merit and ANU need no separate form, but only if your admission application lands on time.
  • Ignoring renewal rules. Calgary and Oulu both set credit and grade conditions you must keep meeting.
  • Assuming full tuition covers everything. Sydney's award excludes health cover, living costs and flights.
  • Applying to one award only. Deadlines are spread across the year, so a shortlist of five to eight is realistic.
  • Reusing a motivation letter word for word. Reviewers can tell, and fit is part of the score.
  • Leaving references to the last week. Nomination-based awards like Pearson need your school on board early.
  • Trusting an old deadline. The Turkiye entry on this site is from a past round; always confirm on the official page.

Frequently asked questions

What are undergraduate scholarships?

They are awards that fund study toward a first bachelor's degree. They can be full-cost, tuition-only, partial or need-based, and they come from universities, governments and foundations.

Can international students get fully funded undergraduate scholarships?

Yes. The Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship at the University of Toronto covers tuition, books, incidental fees and residence for four years, and the Karsh International Scholarships at Duke cover tuition, room and board, fees and three summers of funding.

When should I apply for 2026 undergraduate scholarships?

Most deadlines fall between November and March for the following intake, with a late group in spring and summer. Duke's early round closes 1 November, Boston University's closes 1 December and Illinois Wesleyan's closes 15 March.

Do I need a separate application for every scholarship?

No. Some awards consider you automatically once you apply for admission, including the UBC International Merit Scholarships and the ANU Chancellor's International Scholarships. Others, such as the Pearson program, need a school nomination.

What is the difference between a scholarship and a bursary?

A scholarship usually rewards merit, and a bursary usually targets financial need. The International Undergraduate Student Bursary at the University of Manitoba, for example, divides $240,000 each year among eligible candidates.

Can I hold more than one undergraduate scholarship?

It depends on the award rules, which are set by each university or funder. Check the terms on the official page before you accept two offers.

Do these awards cover living costs?

Some do and many do not. The Pearson and Karsh awards include residence or room and board, while the Sydney International Undergraduate Academic Excellence Scholarship covers tuition and SSAF only, leaving living costs, health cover and flights to you.

What if my grades are average?

Look at need-based and bursary awards rather than pure merit schemes. The Deutschlandstipendium is open to students of all nationalities and does not depend on your income, and many universities run bursaries alongside their top awards.
