What the award covers

The stipend is worth $28,092 per annum at the 2020 rate. It runs for up to three and a half (3.5 years) years for a doctoral degree, or 22 months for a Masters by research.

The award also relieves fees: it covers up to four years for a doctoral degree, or two years for a Masters by research.

Eligibility requirements

For the PhD by Research scholarship, you need one of the following, completed within the last 10 years: a Masters by research degree in a relevant discipline, assessed at a La Trobe Masters by research standard of 70 or above; or a Bachelors (Honours) degree, a Masters by coursework, or an ungraded Masters by research degree, with a weighted average mark of 70 or above across any coursework subjects.

That degree must also include a research thesis of 15,000-20,000 words, or a written research component making up at least 3/8 of 1 year. Alternatively, you can be the lead author of a peer-reviewed publication or other research published within the last 10 years.

For a Masters by Research scholarship, you need a 3 year Bachelor degree in a relevant discipline, completed within the last 10 years, with a weighted average mark in the final year of 65 or above. You must also have finished a thesis, or comparable research work, that the University can assess for honours equivalence.

Who should apply

This award suits students who already hold a research-ready qualification and want to move into a supervised research degree at La Trobe. If your last degree included a substantial thesis or a published paper, and your marks sit at or above the stated thresholds, the PhD route is the one to check first.

If you hold a three year Bachelor degree with a strong final year average and a thesis or comparable research project, the Masters by Research route is the shorter path.
