Overseas Scholarships for South African Students in 2026

Overseas scholarships for South African students are awards from universities, governments and trusts that pay part or all of the cost of studying outside South Africa. The most useful fact first: the biggest rounds close between October and February for study starting the following year, so your search has to begin roughly a year before you want to leave.

How to read this list of international scholarships for South African students

Every award below is open to international applicants, which is the category South African students fall into at these institutions. Read the funding line before the deadline line: a tuition waiver and a full award with a living stipend are very different offers, and the second is the one that decides whether you can actually afford to go.

Start with the Filtered list for this page to see what is open right now, then use the groups below to understand what each type of award gives you. If you are new to the process, read our guide on how to apply for a scholarship before you open a single application form.

Group 1: full awards that pay tuition and living costs

These are the ones that make studying abroad realistic without family support. Gates Cambridge Scholarships for International Students at University of Cambridge covers tuition, a maintenance allowance, airfare and visa costs. Maastricht University NL-High Potential Scholarships for International Students bundles living expenses, insurance, visa costs and tuition. Australia Awards Scholarships for Developing Country Students adds return air travel and health cover.

Group 2: tuition plus a stipend or grant

Here the tuition is covered and a separate amount goes towards living. Clarendon Fund Scholarships 2027 at University of Oxford (Masters/PhD) pays fees plus an annual living grant, and Oxford-Weidenfeld and Hoffmann Scholarship and Leadership Programme (University of Oxford) covers fees plus a living cost grant for Master's study. University of Sydney International Stipend Scholarship (USYDIS), Australia pairs a stipend with a full tuition scholarship for research degrees.

Group 3: tuition fee waivers and partial awards

These cut the bill but leave living costs to you. KTH Scholarship for Master's Study at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden pays tuition only, and Axel Adler Scholarships at University of Gothenburg for Master's Study and Uppsala University Global Scholarships for Master's Study in Sweden are tuition waivers. Radboud Scholarship Programme at Radboud University for International Master's Students reduces your fee and covers visa and insurance costs.

Group 4: awards for developing countries, which include South Africa

Several schemes are open to a list of developing countries rather than to all international students. VLIR-UOS ICP Connect Scholarships in Belgium for Master's Study pays tuition, travel, insurance and living costs. Commonwealth Master's and PhD Scholarships for Developing Commonwealth Countries (DFID) funds study in the UK, and Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarships for Developing Commonwealth Countries covers online Master's study. Always check the country list on the official page before you spend time on the form.

Do you qualify? Eligibility in plain terms

Each award sets its own rules, but the same questions come up again and again. Answer them honestly before you start an application.

  • Nationality and residence: some awards are open to all international students, others name eligible countries. Schemes for developing countries often include South Africa, but you must confirm it on the official page.
  • Level: undergraduate awards are rare and competitive; most of what is listed here is for Master's, PhD or postdoctoral study.
  • Academic record: strong results in your previous degree are the baseline. Some awards also weigh leadership or community work.
  • Financial need: need-based awards such as the UBC International Scholars Program assess your family's contribution, so you submit financial documents.
  • Admission first: many university awards require you to be admitted, or to have applied, before the scholarship deadline.
  • Language: you will need a test score accepted by the university, and some awards set their own minimum.

Who this list suits

Students with a clear degree plan, a strong transcript and at least a year to prepare. It suits Master's applicants best, because that is where most of the funding sits, and it suits researchers who can approach a supervisor early.

Who should look elsewhere

If you need funding within a few months, these annual rounds will not fit. If you cannot cover living costs and the award is a tuition waiver only, look at the fully funded group instead. If your grades are below the university's entry requirement, fix that first: no scholarship overrides admission.

Deadlines and timeline: when to apply for 2026

Deadlines cluster into three windows. Knowing which window you are in tells you what to do this month.

Some schemes run on rolling or varying dates, including the Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarships, Australian Government and the Macquarie University Vice-Chancellor's International Scholarships for Bachelor's and Master's Study in Australia. Check the official page for the current round. Our scholarship deadlines page helps you keep the dates in one place.

How to apply, step by step

The order matters more than the speed. Work through these steps in sequence.

  1. Pick your degree and country first. Choose the programme you actually want, then find the funding attached to it. Applying to a scholarship for a course you are lukewarm about shows in the letter.
  2. Build a shortlist of five to eight awards. Mix full awards, tuition-plus-stipend awards and one or two tuition waivers as a fallback.
  3. Check eligibility line by line. Confirm nationality rules, level, minimum grades and whether you must be admitted first.
  4. Note every deadline in one calendar. Work backwards at least six weeks for documents and references.
  5. Request references early. Give each referee your CV, transcript and a short note on what the award looks for.
  6. Write the motivation letter for each award separately. Name the programme, the reason for that country and what you will do afterwards. Our scholarship motivation letter guide shows the structure.
  7. Submit the university application if the award requires it. Many scholarship forms only open once you have a student number.
  8. Keep proof of every submission. Save confirmation emails and reference numbers in one folder.

Documents you will need, and how to prepare them

Most applications ask for the same core set. Prepare them once, then adapt.

  • Academic transcripts and certificates for every degree, plus a grading explanation if your university uses a scale the destination may not recognise.
  • Valid passport with enough time left for the visa process.
  • English test results accepted by the university.
  • Two or three academic references, sent directly where the form requires it.
  • Motivation or statement of purpose tailored to the award.
  • CV covering study, work, research and volunteer roles.
  • Research proposal and supervisor confirmation for PhD and research Master's awards.
  • Financial documents for need-based awards.

How selection works, and what happens after an offer

Selection usually runs in two stages. The university or funder checks eligibility and academic fit first, then a panel ranks the remaining applicants on the strength of their record, the fit between the applicant and the programme, and the case made in the motivation letter. Awards that assess financial need add a separate review of your household finances.

If you are shortlisted

Some awards invite shortlisted candidates to an interview. Prepare for questions about your academic background, why you chose that country and what you plan to do after graduating. Our scholarship interview questions guide covers the common ones.

If you receive an offer

Read the conditions before you celebrate: many awards depend on you accepting the university place, meeting a grade condition or submitting documents by a set date. Confirm whether the award renews each year and what results you need to keep it. Then start the visa and accommodation process early, because those timelines run on their own schedule.

Common mistakes South African applicants make

  • Applying only to the famous names. Gates Cambridge and Clarendon attract huge fields. Add smaller university awards where your fit is stronger.
  • Missing the admission step. A scholarship form submitted without the underlying university application is usually discarded.
  • Reusing one motivation letter everywhere. Panels notice generic letters that could be sent to any country.
  • Ignoring the funding gap. A tuition waiver still leaves living costs, flights and insurance to pay.
  • Assuming a developing-country scheme includes South Africa. Check the country list on the official page.
  • Leaving references to the last week. Referees need notice, and late letters sink otherwise strong applications.
  • Missing the second-year condition. Awards such as KTH, VU Amsterdam and Science@Leuven continue only if your first-year results are satisfactory.

Other routes if these awards do not fit

Broaden the search rather than forcing one application. Our fully funded scholarships for international students page collects awards that cover tuition and living costs, and scholarships for african students lists schemes aimed at the continent. If you are set on a particular country, start from Scholarships in Germany, Scholarships in Switzerland, Scholarships in Belgium or Scholarships in Canada.

Government schemes are worth a look too. DAAD Development-Related Postgraduate Scholarships in Germany and DAAD Helmut-Schmidt Masters Scholarships in Public Policy and Good Governance fund Master's study in Germany, and the Italian Government Scholarships for Foreign Students 2026/2027 cover study in Italy. For research degrees, see phd scholarships and masters scholarships.

Frequently asked questions

Are there overseas scholarships specifically for South African students?
Most awards on this page are open to international students generally, and South African applicants compete in that pool. Some schemes for developing countries also include South Africa, but you must confirm the country list on the official page before applying.
What is the difference between a full scholarship and a tuition waiver?
A full award pays tuition and contributes to living costs, sometimes with flights and insurance. A tuition waiver covers fees only, so you still need money for rent, food, travel and insurance. The funding line in each listing tells you which one you are looking at.
When should I start applying for 2026?
Roughly a year before you want to leave. The busiest deadlines fall between October and February for study starting the following academic year, and references, language tests and transcripts take weeks to arrange.
Can I apply for a scholarship before I am admitted to the university?
It depends on the award. Many university scholarships require you to have applied or been admitted first, while some government and trust schemes accept applications in parallel. Check the steps on the official page for the award you want.
Do I need to write a separate motivation letter for each scholarship?
Yes. Panels look for a clear reason why you chose that programme and that country. A letter that could be sent anywhere reads as low effort, and it is one of the most common reasons strong applicants are passed over.
Which awards cover living costs as well as tuition?
Among the awards listed here, Gates Cambridge, Maastricht NL-High Potential, Clarendon, Oxford-Weidenfeld, Australia Awards, VLIR-UOS and the Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships all include a living cost element. Read each listing for the exact components.
Can I hold two scholarships at the same time?
Often not. Some awards, such as the Axel Adler Scholarship at the University of Gothenburg, cannot be combined with another scholarship. Check the conditions of each award before you accept more than one offer.
What if I miss the main deadline?
Several rounds close later in the year, including the Italian Government Scholarships, Commonwealth Distance Learning, Nottingham Developing Solutions, Australia Awards and DAAD Helmut-Schmidt. Use them as a second chance and prepare earlier for the next cycle.
