What the Yale Young Global Scholars scholarship actually is
YYGS is an academic enrichment programme run by Yale University for outstanding high school students. Each summer, students from over 150 countries, including all 50 U.S. states, spend one interdisciplinary two-week session living and learning on Yale's campus. The programme is not a degree and carries no course credit.
The "scholarship" part is need-based financial aid. YYGS states that significant need-based financial aid is available for qualified applicants in either applicant pool, and that financial aid students can qualify for partial or full-tuition packages covering up to 100% of tuition. You request it inside the online YYGS application, and students from all countries may apply.
So there is no separate scholarship form on another website. The aid decision arrives with your admission decision, and the official site has the current figures for tuition and aid.
What YYGS 2026 costs and what the aid covers
Two costs sit in front of applicants: the application fee and, if you are admitted, tuition. The application fee is $85 USD for Early Action and $100 USD for Regular Decision, and both are non-refundable. Students with demonstrated financial need can submit the Fee Waiver Form, located in the financial aid section of the application, for a school official to complete; if approved, the fee drops to $0 USD.
Tuition is set by YYGS and changes by round, so the official site has the current figure. What the aid does is reduce that tuition: qualified applicants can receive partial or full-tuition packages covering up to 100% of tuition. The aid is assessed on demonstrated need, not on grades or test scores, and YYGS offers it to students from all countries.
What is not covered by a tuition award
A tuition package addresses tuition. Travel to New Haven and personal spending are separate questions, and the official site is the place to confirm what a specific aid offer includes before you accept.
Who qualifies for YYGS
Every requirement below must be met. YYGS is explicit that no exceptions are made to the age rule, because it relates to restrictions on running a summer programme for minors.
- Age: between 16 and 18 years old by July 18, 2027, the first day of Session III.
- English fluency: able to take part in a rigorous academic curriculum taught in English.
- Grade level: a current high school sophomore or junior, or the international equivalent.
- Graduation date: graduating in May/June 2028 or 2029 from the Northern Hemisphere, or in Nov./Dec. 2027 or 2028 from the Southern Hemisphere.
- First-time participation: you must not have attended a YYGS session in a previous summer (2026 and prior).
If you applied before and were not offered a place, or could not attend, and you still meet the criteria above, YYGS encourages you to re-apply. Applications are accepted from all countries.
YYGS sessions and academic tracks
YYGS 2026 offers three residential sessions, each with the same three tracks. You pick a session and a track when you apply, so read the descriptions before you commit.
| Session | Dates | Tracks offered |
|---|---|---|
| Session I | June 20 to July 2 | Innovations in Science & Technology (IST I), Politics of Law & Economics (PLE I), Solving Global Challenges (SGC I) |
| Session II | July 4 to July 16 | Innovations in Science & Technology (IST II), Politics of Law & Economics (PLE II), Solving Global Challenges (SGC II) |
| Session III | July 18 to July 30 | Innovations in Science & Technology (IST III), Politics of Law & Economics (PLE III), Solving Global Challenges (SGC III) |
All sessions are residential. YYGS states that online sessions are not being offered at this time. The academic programme mixes large lectures from Yale faculty and practitioners, small seminars from a large catalogue of options, breakout discussions, a capstone project, a college experience panel, a symposium and themed meals with instructors. There are no grades and no course credit; students receive an electronic certificate of completion.
YYGS deadlines and decision timeline
There are two applicant pools, and the earlier one is cheaper and gets a decision sooner. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, but decisions are not released until every application in your pool has been reviewed.
| Stage | Early Action | Regular Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Application deadline | 11:59pm ET on October 15, 2026 | 11:59pm ET on January 6, 2027 |
| Application fee | $85 USD | $100 USD |
| Decision release | By December 11, 2026 | By March 10, 2027 |
| Accept offer and pay tuition | By 11:59pm ET on December 16, 2026 | By 11:59pm ET on March 15, 2027 |
Early Action applicants receive an offer of admission or are deferred into the Regular Decision pool. Deferred applicants then receive a decision of admit, waitlist or deny by March 10, 2027. The application typically opens in mid-September and closes in the first week of January for the following summer.
How to apply for YYGS and its financial aid, step by step
The application is online and free to start. Work through these steps in order, and start early enough to give your school official time to complete the fee waiver form if you need one.
- Read the eligibility page and confirm your age, grade level and graduation date fit.
- Review the list of required application components.
- Download the PDF of a sample blank application and draft your answers to as many questions as you can.
- Ask a parent or guardian, a teacher and a school official for their contact details, and go through the sample application with them.
- Open the application, create your account, and write down your email and password so you can return to it.
- Complete every section, then use the Review page to find anything missing.
- Submit the application from the Review page.
- Pay the $85 USD Early Action fee or $100 USD Regular Decision fee in your Applicant Status Portal. If you submitted a completed Fee Waiver request, check the portal for the outcome; if it is denied, your application is not reviewed until the fee is paid.
- Watch your inbox for the confirmation receipt, which usually arrives within 24 to 48 hours of submission.
If you get stuck, contact YYGS staff while you still have time before the deadline. The earlier you ask, the more likely they can help you in time. For general help with forms and essays, see our guide on how to apply for a scholarship.
Documents and information to prepare
YYGS does not ask for transcripts or test scores in the way a university does, but it does ask for information and contacts you should line up in advance.
- Your own details, including your school, grade level and expected graduation date.
- Contact information for a parent or guardian.
- Contact information for a teacher and/or an official at your school.
- Your financial information for the need-based aid section, since the aid is assessed on demonstrated need.
- The Fee Waiver Form, completed by your school official, if you are requesting a fee waiver.
- Your session and track choice, plus your written answers to the application questions.
Drafting your answers in a separate document first makes the online form much faster to complete. If you are also preparing applications for university funding later, our page on the scholarship motivation letter covers the writing side in more detail.
How YYGS selects students and awards aid
Applications are read and reviewed on a rolling basis, but decisions are held until the whole pool has been reviewed so that every applicant in a pool is treated the same way. YYGS does not publish a ranking formula, and the official site is the place to check any statement about selection criteria.
Financial aid is need-based and is assessed within the same application. YYGS states that significant need-based financial aid is available for qualified applicants in both pools, and encourages anyone with demonstrated financial need to apply for it. That means the aid request does not sit in a separate competition with its own deadline: it travels with your application and is confirmed alongside your admission status.
What this means for your strategy
Because the pools are reviewed separately and the aid is available in both, the Early Action round gives you an earlier answer at a lower fee. If your documents are ready, applying early is the cleaner route.
Common mistakes that cost applicants a place
- Missing the age cut-off. You must be 16 to 18 by July 18, 2027. There are no exceptions, so check the date before you write anything.
- Applying in the wrong grade. YYGS is for current sophomores and juniors, with graduation dates as listed above.
- Applying again after attending. Previous participants from 2026 and earlier are not eligible for YYGS 2027.
- Leaving the fee unpaid. If your fee waiver is denied and you do not pay, your application is never reviewed.
- Asking a school official for the waiver form at the last minute. It needs their input, so request it early.
- Submitting without checking the Review page. Missing components hold up your application.
- Assuming the aid is automatic. You request financial aid inside the application; do not skip that section if you need it.
Who YYGS suits, and who should look elsewhere
YYGS suits a strong high school sophomore or junior who wants a short, intensive, residential taste of university-level learning in the United States, and who wants to meet peers from many countries. It also suits students who need financial help, since the aid can cover up to 100% of tuition and is open to applicants from all countries.
It is a poor fit if you are looking for a degree, course credit or a qualification you can list as a university course, because YYGS awards no grades or credit. It is also not for you if you have already attended a session, if you fall outside the age band, or if you are already at the stage of applying to full university programmes. Students at that stage should look at undergraduate scholarships or scholarships in the United States instead, and our scholarship finder lists current openings.
After you are offered a place
An offer comes with a deadline to accept or decline and to pay tuition. For Early Action that is 11:59pm ET on December 16, 2026; for Regular Decision it is 11:59pm ET on March 15, 2027. Read your financial aid decision at the same time as your admission decision, since the two arrive together.
If the aid package does not cover what you need, contact YYGS staff before the acceptance deadline rather than after it. Once you accept, plan your travel and documents for your session dates, and check the official site for what to bring and what the programme expects from residential students.
Other funding to consider alongside YYGS
YYGS is a summer programme, so it sits alongside your longer-term funding plans rather than replacing them. If you want a fully funded degree later, start with our list of fully funded scholarships for international students and browse by destination, for example scholarships in the United Kingdom, scholarships in Canada or scholarships in Germany.
For structured help with the paperwork, our guides on the recommendation letter for scholarship and scholarship deadlines apply to YYGS as much as to university awards. You can also browse all guides and scholarships by country.
